MovingMoment is a contemporary dance project led by Katja Schia and Nina Biong. We use positive emotions and body language to create performances with children and teenagers together with proffesional dancers on stage.

We aim to:

  •  Anchor positive feelings in the body through dance.

  • Play with biological mechanisms through movement, increasing the production of endorphins, oxytocin and testosterone in order to increase confidence, enhance trust in others and the ability to express one's self.

  • Teach the children and teenagers how to reflect on expressing positive emotions non-verbally

  • Create a professional performance that involves children and young people who are co-creative practitioners with the professionals, so the children/youth themselves feel ownership to the piece

How do we do it?

Workshop:

During the workshop we will study emotions like joy, trust, care, empathy and the sense of achievement along with the natural body language associated with these feelings. We teach basic improvisational techniques, simple choreographed dance combinations and how to dance with a partner. The exercises are always linked to various feelings we wish to work with.

Performance:

We use the knowledge we get from the workshop, and let the dancers continue the creative process finding their own, natural movement language. The performers are monitored closely throughout the process, where they will be co-creating and dancing along with professionals on stage. In this way, wish to give to children / youth ownership of the art they help to create. This has a number of positive consequences for participants including increased confidence, both socially and creatively.

We like to work with performers in different ages on stage, as each age has its own character. Preferably a group of ten performers between 10-18 years.  We've experienced that working in this age distinction create a varied and rich expression.

Background information:

We are intrigued by how movement can have a direct impact on our wellbeing. Our posture, our gestures and how we move in daily life in relation to others and ourselves is influenced by our mood, and vice versa. Recent research has proven that certain movements help to produce certain hormones in our body. E.g lifting your arms over your head like a winner for 2 mins. increases the level of testosterone in your blood. Increased testosterone gives you a stronger feeling of confidence and a better ability to perform. Also, embracing someone increases production of oxytocin, a hormone that helps us to trust others and bond.

We use this knowledge to do further research in a choreographical context. We believe that the combination of dance and the cultivation of positive attitudes and emotions will help the participants to root positive feelings in their bodies.

Project

Practically

We produce a frame performance in advance. This frame performance is containing clear parts with set music and open spaces. The main blocks of the groups individual work will be in these openings.

With the group
